United Theological Seminary is pleased to introduce a new addition to its academic portfolio: a Doctor of Theology, launching in Summer 2024. The Doctor of Theology is an advanced research degree program designed to support leading pastor-scholars, teachers and thinkers in the Church, equipping them for careers in theological education.

United’s Doctor of Theology is an innovative program, conducted primarily from a distance rather than in a more traditional residential format. It requires a total of only four weeks of in-person intensives, held annually each July at the seminary’s Dayton, Ohio campus. All other courses can be completed online through United’s virtual courses.

United president Dr. Kent Millard believes the program will make a difference not only to students but in the life of the Church. “Everywhere we look, churches are facing difficult and demanding questions about the future. Now more than ever, we need thoughtful, expertly trained Christian leaders devoted to the ongoing work of church renewal,” says President Millard. “Our Doctor of Theology program is designed to shape thinkers who will bring their advanced theological skills to respond to the needs of the future church. We believe this is critical to fulfill our mission to prepare faithful and fruitful Christian leaders to make disciples of Jesus Christ.”

The three-year program is highly customizable and individualized. Each student will receive mentorship in teaching, scholarship and church renewal to support their research within a specialized field of theology.

“At United, we’re exploring the critical intersection of church and academy for the future of theological education,” says Dr. Justus Hunter, Director of the Doctor of Theology program. “If you love theological research and are passionate about its place in the renewal of the church, our Doctor of Theology program might be for you.”

United is currently accepting applications for the inaugural cohort. The first term will begin in May 2024, with students attending two weeks of intensive classes in mid-July.
