Center for the Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) Heritage
Established in 1979, the Center for EUB Heritage celebrates and preserves the story of the EUB Church and its forebearers, the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, the Evangelical Association, the United Evangelical Church, and the Evangelical Church.
The Center maintains an extensive collection of materials that document this heritage. The Center also hosts conferences, supports scholarly research, conducts oral history interviews, and offers special exhibits to engage current and future generations in the study of this important, spiritual heritage.
United Theological Seminary was created in 1954 with the unification of two Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) seminaries: Bonebrake Theological Seminary of Dayton, OH (formerly Union Biblical Seminary, founded in 1871 by the Church of the United Brethren in Christ) and the Evangelical School of Theological of Reading, PA (formerly Schuylkill Seminary, founded in 1881 by the Evangelical Association). The Center houses material from each of these predecessor institutions. In 1968, the Evangelical United Brethren Church formally merged with the Methodist Church to form The United Methodist Church.
The Center for the Evangelical United Brethren Heritage is currently staffed by three colleagues who share their time with other responsibilities at the seminary.
- Dr. Wendy J. Deichmann, Director of the Center, is Professor of History and Theology at United.
- Mr. Ken S. Cochrane, Assistant Director of the Center, is Director of the O’Brien Library.
- Dr. Andy Wood, Archivist for the Center, is Research Historian of the O’Brien Library.
If you have questions about the Center, please contact eubcenter@united.edu and someone will reply at the earliest opportunity.
