MASTERS

The application process can take several weeks to complete. Below are the steps you’ll need to follow to complete the process on the MyUnited applicant portal. If you plan to apply for financial aid or scholarships, it is advised that you work on these applications simultaneously.

STEP ONE: START YOUR APPLICATION

Complete the quick and easy online application. Once submitted, you will receive credentials for the applicant portal where you can submit all other application materials and your letter of intent.

STEP TWO: SUBMIT APPLICATION MATERIALS

  • Background Check
  • Official Transcripts: Official undergraduate and graduate transcripts must be sent directly from the school
  • Three Letters of Recommendation
  • Two Essays

STEP THREE: COMPLETE LETTER OF INTENT

After you have completed your application, the Office of Admissions will review it. This can take up to two weeks. The Office of Admissions will contact you if there are any outstanding required items. An interview may be requested.

If you are admitted, you will receive a phone call and an Admittance Letter with instructions on how to acknowledge your Letter of Intent (LOI) to attend United Theological Seminary. You will need to acknowledge the LOI as soon as possible. If your application is denied, you will be notified by mail or email. Upon receipt of your LOI, we will send you confirmation that we received your letter and notify the Registrar’s Office of your enrollment.

  • Spiritual Autobiography: Prepare a 2-3 page “spiritual autobiography.”
  • Description of Ministry Context: Prepare a one-paragraph description of your ministry context (church, school, hospital, community agency, or other)


Doctor of Theology:

  • Background Check
  • Official Transcripts: Official undergraduate and graduate transcripts must be sent directly from the school
  • Two academic letters of recommendation
  • One ministerial letter of recommendation
  • Statement of Purpose: Prepare a 300-500 word description of your area of research interest and purpose for enrolling in the ThD program.
  • Writing Sample: Prepare a writing sample that demonstrates your ability to research and write at an advanced Masters level
  • GRE is optional

English Proficiency

Information on taking the TOEFL test is available online at www.ets.org/toefl or you may write to Educational Testing Service, PO Box 6151, Princeton, NJ 08541.

  • Master’s degree seeking applicants: Students are required to show evidence of English proficiency. United requires a recent TOEFL score of 550 for paper-based tests, 213 for computer-based tests or 79 for internet-based tests. The score must be reported by the testing agency on an original document.
  • Doctoral degree seeking applicants: Students are required to show evidence of English proficiency. United requires a recent TOEFL score of 570 for paper-based tests, 230 for computer-based tests or 88 for internet-based tests. The score must be reported by the testing agency on an original document.

Transcripts

Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended are required. If a degree is conferred from an institution outside the U.S. that is not recognized by a U.S. accrediting body, United requires a transcript evaluation through an approved third-party agency (e.g. Scholaro, World Education Services, etc). In exceptional cases, the Academic Dean’s office may waive the requirement for third party review of an international transcript.

  • Fill Out the Application: Complete the application form with your personal information, educational background, and any other required details.
  • Upload Your Transcripts

  • Specify Where to Send the Evaluation: Make sure to specify that a copy of the evaluation should be sent to United Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio.

Financial Documentation

After admission, please provide the necessary financial documentation required for the issuance of F-1 Student Visas (I-20) or J-1 Exchange Visitor Visas (DS-2019), as related to SEVIS.To complete the  Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) paperwork, United Theological Seminary requires specific documents from you and/or your financial supporters to verify your ability to cover academic and living expenses. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) mandates that verified financial documentation be submitted before your visa paperwork can be processed.

Verified Documents

  • A copy of your passport
  • Visa information
  • Financial Responsibility Form
  • Bank statements reflecting the total estimated cost of attendance
  • Supporting Letter and/or Organization Letter
    • Instructions for Letters of Financial Support: If your financial supporter is an individual or family, please submit the Supporting Letter.If your financial supporter is a church, conference, or institution, please submit the Organization Letter
  • Health Insurance documentation (J-1 Visa only): Proof of coverage for the entire duration of your academic program.
