The O’Brien Library, named in honor of long-time librarians Elmer J. and Betty A. O’Brien, is located on the United Theological Seminary campus. The library features over 20,000 volumes of print resources in the reference collections, rare books collection, denominational collections, and archive collections. These resources are intended for on-site use only.
In 2020, the O’Brien Library joined the Digital Theological Library (DTL) to provide United students and faculty with expanded access to digital resources. Also, the Open Access DTL (OADTL) catalog is available for everyone, providing free access to over 120,000 eBooks and other online resources.

The O’Brien Library and its staff members are dedicated to accommodating and assisting our patrons to the best of our ability, but within certain limits as determined by personnel and resource availability.
The O’Brien Library no longer circulate print materials to patrons (with the exception of residential faculty) as most of the library main stacks collection has been donated to the Digital Theological Library (DTL) for digital processing and inclusion in the DTL Electronic Reserves collections. The remaining print collection primarily consists of reference materials and archive resources for on-site use only. The Digital Theological Library (DTL) provides “circulating” resources for current students and faculty.
While the O’Brien Library will no longer provide Interlibrary Loan (ILL) lending or borrowing services for print resources, interlibrary Loan (ILL) services will continue to be provided for current students and faculty through the Digital Theological Library (DTL).
Patrons needing access to resources not currently available through the DTL catalog may process a request directly through the catalog or submit a request to the Director of the Library at kscochrane@united.edu (please be sure to include all relevant information: author, title, publication date, etc.).

The DTL’s mission is “increased digital access at decreased costs” and provides its member libraries with access to:
Several non-English language databases, including ones in Chinese, Korean, German, French, and Spanish, are available through DTL. DTL also provides member libraries with both Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and Electronic Reserve services, making online access to nearly any resource available (whether digitally or in print) possible for DTL patrons.
