Bishop Mike Lowry to preach at 2020 Opening Convocation
The 2020-21 Convocation on September 9 marks the beginning of the Seminary’s 150th academic year.
Join United Theological Seminary on Wednesday, September 9, as the Seminary marks the opening of its 150th academic year. Bishop Mike Lowry, episcopal leader of the Central Texas Conference of The United Methodist Church, will bring a message for the United community during a virtual convocation service, to be broadcast at 1 p.m. Eastern on YouTube and Facebook.
Bishop Lowry had been slated to begin serving as Bishop-in-Residence at United in fall 2020, following retirement from his role as episcopal leader of the Central Texas Conference. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, episcopal appointments and retirements in The United Methodist Church have been postponed in coordination with postponements of the denomination’s General, Jurisdictional and Central Conferences.
The faculty, staff and students of United Theological Seminary look forward to welcoming Bishop Lowry to the seminary community in January 2022.
“United will be honored to welcome Bishop Lowry as our Bishop-in-Residence,” says President Kent Millard. “Bishop Lowry is a highly effective leader in both local Church ministry and episcopal leadership, with gifts in evangelism, local church revitalization, pastoral care, teaching the historic Christian faith and inspirational preaching. Our students, faculty and staff will all be blessed by his mentoring presence.”
As the fall semester begins at United, Opening Convocation is not the only event going virtual. United recently conducted its Fall 2020 Doctor of Ministry Intensive in a fully virtual format. More than 200 students and mentors attended via web conference to focus on “Ministry in Times of Crisis.” The Seminary will offer masters courses in both online and on-campus options, with expanded opportunities to attend online instead of in-person. Students and instructors participating on campus will be required to follow health protocols that include wearing face coverings and practicing social distancing at all times.
All are invited to attend the virtual Opening Convocation of the Seminary’s historic 150th academic year! To watch online on September 9, at 1 p.m. Eastern, join on facebook.com/unitedts or youtube.com/unitedseminaryOH.
