“Pentecostals and Charismatics comprise the fastest growing and largest Protestant constituency in the world. Their influence also extends into mainline and Evangelical Protestantism, said Dr. Peter Bellini, Assistant Professor in the Practice of Missiology in the Vera Blinn Chair and Director of Non-Degree programs. “We created this emphasis to meet the growing demand in theological education and ministry for instruction in Pentecostal, Charismatic and Renewal studies.”
Dr. Bellini noted the growth and influence of these renewal-oriented Christians can no longer be ignored.
“At United, we are experiencing an increase in students who are Pentecostal, Charismatic or Charismatic-friendly, including students connected with Aldersgate Renewal Ministries, a charismatic organization affiliated with the United Methodist Church,” he said.
Bellini said the program meets a three-fold need: To study the phenomenal growth of this global movement, so that we can understand and learn from it; to provide students with sound theological, biblical and historical foundations for understanding this amazing movement of the Spirit; and to instruct in the implementation of sound Spirit-filled practices for the salvation of the world and the health and growth of the Church.
“United is the only United Methodist affiliated seminary that has taken on this challenge and offers such courses with an emphasis in Global Charismatic Studies,” Bellini said.
