Masters Admission

The application process can take several weeks to complete. Below are the steps you’ll need to follow to complete the process on the applicant portal. If you plan to apply for financial aid or scholarships, it is advised that you work on these applications simultaneously.

 

STEP ONE: Start your application

Complete the quick and easy online application. Once submitted, you will receive credentials for the applicant portal where you can submit all other application materials and your letter of intent.

 

STEP TWO: Submit application Materials

  • Official Transcripts
    Official undergraduate and graduate transcripts must be sent directly from the school
  • Letters of Recommendation
    • MDiv applicants: Four letters of recommendation
    • MACM and MTS applicants: Three letters of recommendation
  • Essays
    MDiv and MMin programs require two short essays. Other masters degree programs require only one essay. Instruction can be found in the applicant portal.

 

STEP Three: Complete Letter of Intent

After you have completed your application, the Office of Admissions will review it. This can take up to two weeks. The Office of Admissions will contact you if there are any outstanding required items. An interview may be requested.

If you are admitted, you will receive a phone call and an Admittance Letter with instructions on how to acknowledge your Letter of Intent (LOI) to attend United Theological Seminary. You will need to acknowledge the LOI as soon as possible. If your application is denied, you will be notified by mail or email. Upon receipt of your LOI, we will send you confirmation that we received your letter and notify the Registrar’s Office of your enrollment.

Doctoral Admission

    Prepare a 2-3 page “spiritual autobiography.”
  • One-Paragraph Description
    Prepare a one-paragraph description of your ministry context (church, school, hospital, community agency, or other).

  • English Proficiency
    Information on taking the TOEFL test is available online at www.ets.org/toefl or you may write to Educational Testing Service, PO Box 6151, Princeton, NJ 08541.
  • Masters degree seeking applicants
    Students are required to show evidence of English proficiency. United requires a recent TOEFL score of 550 for paper-based tests, 213 for computer-based tests or 79 for internet-based tests. The score must be reported by the testing agency on an original document.
  • Doctoral degree seeking applicants
    Students are required to show evidence of English proficiency. United requires a recent TOEFL score of 570 for paper-based tests, 230 for computer-based tests or 88 for internet-based tests. The score must be reported by the testing agency on an original document.
  • Citizenship
    Evidence of nationality and citizenship. A photocopy of the passport is acceptable.
  • Financial Resources:
    Evidence of adequate financial resources for school and living expenses including copies of bank statements and signed support letters from sponsoring organizations and individuals.

  • Health Insurance (J-1 Visa Only)
    Evidence of health insurance coverage for the entire duration of student’s career.

Masters’ and Non-Degree applicants should submit their application one month prior to the start of classes in the semester for which they are applying unless other arrangements have been made with the Admissions Office.

Doctor of Ministry Application Deadlines

Doctor of Ministry applicants should submit their application and supporting documents by July 15 for the August Intensive and by December 18 for the January Intensive.

International Students

International students are admitted in both the fall and spring semesters. International applicants must submit their application by March 15 for the fall semester and August 30 for the spring semester.
