Students, faculty and staff at United build community by studying and sharing together in worship, common meal, ministry groups, social and community events, and serving others. United is a diverse community of women and men bringing a variety of viewpoints, cultures, and expressions of faith into dynamic interaction.  Participants in the life of the seminary have opportunities to grow as people of God in ministry to the Church and the world.

  • Music Ministries

The United Theological Seminary choir, United Sound, is open to students, their spouses, faculty, and staff. The choir meets when classes are in session, and provides music ministry for weekly chapel services and other special events.

Over the decades, annual spring tours have taken “The Sound” to General Conferences of The United Methodist Church, and to visit alumni/ae congregations throughout the United States, and even Europe.

The choir explores a broad range of musical styles, including traditional, global, gospel, spirituals, and contemporary praise - thus involving students in an exciting variety of worship and prayer forms.

  • The Harriet L. Women's Center

The Harriet L. Miller Women’s Center sponsors programs and projects that integrate the history, scholarship, leadership and ministries of women into the seminary curriculum and supports retreats, workshops and theological dialogue for women faculty and staff, ordained and lay women in the Church, denominational organizations and other church groups.

The Center also assists men in developing their capacity to recognize the presence and participation of women in seminary and clergy communities and in the Church.

  • Student Groups

    African American Student Fellowship
A student group that provides support and leadership within the community for African American students.  In addition to informal gatherings, the AASF works with the Academic Dean’s office and the Worship and Spiritual Life Committee to plan and organize special events and worship services that celebrate African American religious heritage and culture.  Other events may be planned as needed and as resources permit.

Contagious Athanasius Theological Society (CATS) is an informal Bible study group led by Dr. David Watson. The group meets Thursdays except during Reading Week at noon in Room 1314. Bring your own lunch.

    Order of St. Luke
A dispersed community that follows the example of St. Luke.  Each local chapter commits to uplifting its members and embracing the sacramental life, which includes the Daily Office and Holy Communion.

A liturgical ministry group led by students who prepare the worship spaces for seminary worship celebrations. Fabrics and accessories are incorporated–as appropriate–to enhance the worship experience or to illustrate a worship theme or sermon topic. Sacristans also furnish the elements and dress the Communion table.

    Student Council
A group representing the student body at United Theological Seminary. Elected by the students in the spring of each year, the Council advocates on their behalf by serving as members of the following standing faculty committees: Masters Studies Committee, Worship & Spiritual Life, and Student Development.  Student Council also names a Student Trustee and two Student Associate Trustees who represent student interests on the Board of Trustees. The Student Council meets at least once per month during the 12-week module of each semester, and hosts student forums, fundraisers, and social activities throughout the academic year.

    Young Adult Seminarians Network (YASN)
A local group of a national network of United Methodist seminarians aged 35 and under. YASN is also open to those individuals over 35 who are concerned with the issues of their younger counterparts. The group began in 2004 at Student Forum, the annual gathering of the United Methodist Student Movement.
